Meet Arezoo Khaligh

My Story

My path to becoming a psychotherapist has been shaped by both professional training and lived experience. I began my journey with a Master’s degree in Business, but along the way, my own experiences in therapy and my familiarity with 12-step programs such as OA (Overeaters Anonymous), AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), CoDA (Co-Dependents Anonymous), and OCA (Obsessive-Compulsive Anonymous) opened my eyes to the power of healing, growth, and connection. I realized that what truly inspired me was not numbers or strategy, but people — their stories, struggles, and strength. Supporting others through their challenges gave me a deep sense of purpose, and I knew this was the path I was meant to follow. One of my greatest joys is witnessing people grow and transform — much like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly.

My personal background and experiences

As an immigrant, I also carry the lived experience of navigating cultural adjustment, identity, belonging and grief. Growing up in a country deeply impacted by war, economic hardship, religion and gender bias, and social inequality, I bring a genuine understanding of the struggles many of my clients face today. I also have meaningful experience supporting individuals from the LGBTQ+ community, including those whose cultural background has added layers of complexity to their journey. This combination of personal insight and professional experience allows me to connect authentically with people from diverse walks of life and provide compassionate, culturally sensitive support.

Life, Passions, and What Grounds Me

I am a wife, aunt, and friend to many special people in my life, including my black cat, Adam. I find joy and balance in painting, playing the piano, photography, nature exploration, and practicing mindfulness meditation, which help me stay present and grounded. Volunteering with nonprofit mental health programs is deeply meaningful to me, and I love connecting with others through social gatherings and shared experiences. These passions, along with my creativity and curiosity, enrich both my life and my work as a psychotherapist, allowing me to bring warmth, empathy, and authenticity to the space I create for my clients.

My Credentials and Therapy Approaches

I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), with advanced training in evidence-based approaches, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)
  • Trauma-Informed Therapy
  • Mindfulness-Based Practices

Professionally, I have worked extensively with children, youth, young adults, seniors, and families, both in private practice and through organizations such as Kids Help Phone and Good2Talk. In these roles, I supported individuals in moments of crisis and guided them toward safety, hope, and strength. These experiences taught me how to remain steady and compassionate in even the most difficult situations while helping people uncover their inner resilience.

Areas of expertise

In my practice, I support clients with a wide range of challenges, including:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Trauma and grief
  • Relationship difficulties and family issues
  • Young adult struggles and life transitions
  • Addictions, including alcohol, gambling, work, sex, etc
  • Disordered eating and other compulsive behaviours

I am particularly passionate about helping clients navigate relationship challenges, heal from past wounds, and build resilience and clarity for the life they want. I also work with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds, including immigrants and LGBTQ+ individuals, and bring a deep understanding of the unique pressures and experiences they may face.

How to become a butterfly

Becoming your most authentic self is a journey, and my mission is to provide you with a safe space where you can slow down, feel, and reflect while you are supported with warmth, compassion, and non-judgment. Together, we’ll work to uncover your strengths, navigate challenges, and gently release patterns that no longer serve you.

In this space, transformation is guided by your own pace and readiness. With support, insight, and practical strategies, you’ll gain clarity, resilience, and self-awareness — all the tools needed to move confidently toward the life you want.

Just as a butterfly emerges transformed, I believe each of us has the capacity for deep healing and growth.

At Becoming a Butterfly Psychotherapy and Counselling Centre, I am honoured to walk alongside you on this journey, providing encouragement, guidance, and care as you spread your wings and step into the most authentic version of yourself.
